Executive Director Roles and Responsibilities

Full-Time Exempt Position

Reports to: Heroes for Children’s Board of Directors

Offices: Heroes for Children Headquarters, Richardson, TX

Supervises:  North & West Texas Director, South & Central Texas Director, Director of Program Services, Director of Operations, and Finance Manager

General Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the leader of the organization, uphold the mission of the organization, achieve annual revenue goals, and fiscally manage expense budget.
  • Manage and direct staff, both locally and in Houston office
  • Foster a healthy organizational structure
  • Oversee the creation of PR and marketing materials for the organization
  • Speak at public events about the mission and focus of the organization
  • Attend all major events and parties associated with the events
  • Travel frequently throughout Texas, as necessary
  • Manage necessary projects as they arise in the organization

Financial Responsibilities:

  • Work with NTX and STX Directors on all fundraising capacities for the organization
  • Work with Directors (NTX, STX, Program, Operations) in creating event budgets for submission to Board Treasurer and Finance Manager
  • Work with Board Treasurer and Finance Manager to develop budget to submit to Finance Committee
  • Attend finance meetings with Finance Manager and Board Treasurer
  • Implement and follow the yearly budget approved by the Board of Directors
  • Approve all financial assistance grants and coordinate giving with Director of Operations
  • Approve and sign all checks issued by the organization

Volunteer/Donor Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with Board Chairman to create meeting agendas and goals for Board of Directors/ Advisory Board to achieve HFC’s strategic plan
  • Oversee assigned Board committees
  • Develop Director’s Report and submit to the Board of Directors prior to each Board meeting
  • Communicate with Board of Directors on a consistent basis
  • Attend all Board of Director meetings
  • Manage and cultivate relationships with donors and volunteers
  • Work with NTX and STX Directors to strengthen and expand donor base
  • Work with Directors (NTX, STX, Program and Operations) on a monthly basis for task assignment based on current needs of the organization

Mission-Related Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of programs that meet the mission of Heroes for Children
  • Work with Program and Operations Directors to educate social workers regarding financial and social assistance programs for families
  • Educate the community on the mission of Heroes for Children


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of five years of results-driven, non-profit leadership and management experience, preferably at the Director level
  • Passionate about serving children and their families
  • Keen understanding of non-profit management
  • Ability to interact with and develop the donor community
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors
  • Experience managing a complex budget
  • Ability to form and lead dynamic teams
  • Strong management and interpersonal skills that include the ability to inspire and motivate
  • Confident public speaker with strong presentation skills
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Effective at conflict management
  • Strategic and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as necessary
  • Sense of humor
